To the Big Apple on a Bar of Soap

November 29, 2006 at 8:51 am (Business, Life, Marketing, Opinion, Women)

I know 2 women that have teenaged daughters that need to raise a couple of thousand dollars for a chaperoned school trip. The trips are both a year away, I believe.

One woman and her daughter learned how to make handmade soap. They are selling scented soap both offline (person to person) and online at etsy. Her soaps are selling quite well. Even her teachers have bought multiples for Christmas gifts. Her first customers are re-ordering. She’s having fun and earning the needed funds.

The other woman is using what I call ‘click it rich’ schemes to try raise the money and posting them all over social networking and free ad sites. She is determined to ‘do this’ for her daughter, because she is a very loving mother. Her last ad said she only needs 300 more “sign ups” and she’ll qualify to win an Amazon gift certificate, which she will then auction towards the trip. She spends hours and hours every day posting “make money”  links and “please sign up” links on the web.

I feel sad for one of the girls. I bet you know which. And why.

P.S. The soaps are at: http://newyorksoapexchange.etsy.com

  1. fracas said,

I do know which and why, and I agree. That’s hardly a newsflash though, since we usually think very much alike.

Faerie Flash Designs (on my blogroll) also sells at Etsy. I’ve thought about setting up there myself. Being the internet guru of almost all things… have you heard much in the way of people being satisfied there or not?
