Great. Now Amateurs Can Pick 90% of Locks With No Sign of Forced Entry.

February 7, 2007 at 11:08 pm (Life, News, Personal, Technology, Thoughts, Women)

Have you heard of lock bumping? Lock bumping allows anyone to pick 90% of locks in seconds flat. All it takes is a “bump” key, which are sold online. And it’s all over the news. Stick the bump key in the lock, tap the key – and you’re in. It works on deadbolts, too.

According to statistics provided by the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) and the Department of Justice, nearly 2/3 of all break-ins occur with no sign of forced entry. While some of these crimes may be a result of an unlocked door, most experts agree that lock bumping, picking or use of an unauthorized duplicate key are often the case.

As average citizens, we now have to question every robbery we hear of “with no sign of forced entry.”  So, what can we do?

 1) Please watch these videos:

Short version:

Slightly longer, with warning about PO boxes & identity theft:

2) Tell me what you think!
Had you heard of this before? Does it scare you? Thoughts?

3) Please pass this url on.
Link to this post it in your blog, or trackback, or just blog about it.  Let people know. Like they said in the news reports, people who want to break in already know about it. Bump keys are available online. It’s the innocent people being broken into that don’t know about it. Please tell any women you know that live alone. Please. This is scary crap.

5 girls raped by sexual predators on MySpace. Thoughts?

February 6, 2007 at 3:33 am (Internet, Life, Opinion, Personal)

MySpace has been sued by the families of 5 girls (in New York, Texas, Pennsylvania & South Carolina) who claim MySpace failed to protect their minor children from adult members that are sexual predators.

All five girls were 14-15 at the time they were assaulted.

In each case, the attackers talked the girls into meeting them and then sexually assaulted them. Four of the five girls (two were sisters) were given alcohol, drugs - or both - and one girl was also kidnapped.

Six adult males were arrested. Two pleaded guilty and are serving time. The others are awaiting trial. The male accused in Pennsylvania is awaiting trial on 12 charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.

  • Police say dozens of MySpace teens have been molested, some murdered, by people who first contacted them through the site.
  • Lawyers for the families say that MySpace committed fraud and was reckless by marketing the site as “safe.”

MySpace is defending itself by pointing to family responsibility.

What do YOU think?

Monday Melee; Personal Musings

February 5, 2007 at 3:45 am (Life, Musings, Personal, Ramblings)

1. The Misanthtropic: (something about humanity you absolutely hate)
Cruelty. I hate when people are cruel. I hate when the subject of the cruelty doesn’t understand that no one can hurt their feelings without their permission. It took me a long time to learn that.

2. The Meretricious: (Expose something/someone phony, fraudulent or bogus)
The diet industry. Appetite suppressants only trigger ghrelin production, which slows our metabolism and makes it harder to lose weight. The “trick” to losing weight doesn’t come in a bottle. It comes from understanding our bodies.

3. The Malcontent:
(Something you’re unhappy with)
It makes me unhappy to know that less than 10% of the developed world’s military budget would feed and immunize all the sick and hungry children in the world.

4. The Meritorious: (Give someone credit – name it if you can)
My daughter. Because everything I had to learn to be a better parent made me a better person. Especially during the single mom years. Sometimes doing “right” for another person also does right for us.

5. The Mirror: (See something good about yourself and name it)
I like the laughter in my eyes. It had disappeared for so long. I like having it back.

6. The Make-Believe: (Name something you wish for)
I would like to finish the books I am writing, and have them sell so well that I could build a children’s library in Haiti. I think I would weep with joy if I could accomplish that in this lifetime.

Your turn…. if you’re reading this, why not join The Monday Melee, too? It’s here…
